The Household

The Ottoman household was very crowded indeed. Not only did the sons stay at home after marriage, it was also the case that a man was allowed to have up to four wives.

With the coming of the Turkish Republic in 1923 all this was changed. Now it is one wife only. Furthermore, newly married couples start their own home rather than living with the boy's parents. Despite the changed system, some households are still crowded, but this time with children who, regardless of sex and age stay in the parental home until marriage. Turkey has got one of the highest birth rates in the world too. Especially in Eastern Anatolia, families with as many as seven to ten children are common and 60% of the whole population is said to be under 20 years of age.
